The Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are a breathtakingly beautiful group of 9 Granite islands, located in a Thai marine national park 48 miles North West of the paradise holiday island of Phuket. This is a protected Marine National Park with a 3 mile protection zone around all the islands which has preserved the fish stocks by providing an ideal nursery area for the resident species.

The very beautiful Similan Islands..

The long distance from Phuket means that for most of the Phuket based sport–fishing boats, the Similan Islands are out of range, meaning they are lightly fished, so more often than not we have the whole area to ourselves.

A fantastic Black Marlin from the Similan Islands!

Although it is possible to encounter the Black Marlin in the waters closer to Phuket, the Similan Islands and the areas surrounding them are unquestionably the best option for anglers wishing to target the most prized fish of all, the Marlin. The large numbers of Tuna around the Islands, and many strategically positioned F.A.D.s (Fish Aggregating Devices; rafts of bamboo that attract bait fish.) pull in Marlin from great distances. There is also a twin underwater sea–mount called Thon Mai where the depth of the water rises from 250 meters–70 and 90 meters where the Marlin patrol in search of their prey, predominately the different species of Tuna. Six miles west of the Similan Islands is the Drop–Off, a place where the water dramatically deepens and stretches for many miles. We follow the drop–off with the fish–finder in pursuit of the patrolling Marlin, plus many other species that are attracted to it such as Sailfish, Wahoo, Barracuda,   Dorado, Rainbow Runner, Yellowfin,  and Skipjack Tuna.

Please click on the name of one of the above fish to view a photo gallery of the Species.

.Massive Giant Trevally!

The above mentioned F.A.D.s are also a great place for popper–casting, jigging and fly–fishing, especially for the species; Giant Trevally,  Rainbow Runners, Tuna and Dorado.

We do not provide fly–fishing equipment, so you need to bring along your own equipment should you want to fly–fish. We do however provide the necessary popper casting and jigging equipment with a large supply of various poppers and jigs etc.

Bull Dorado at Similan

During the crossing from Phuket to the Similan Islands, we troll along the drop–off west of Phuket which is often productive for many of the big game-fish species found in the Andaman Sea, especially Black Marlin, Dorado, Skipjack Tuna, Barracuda and Wahoo.

On a live–aboard trip to the Similans, we bottom fish at night where there are a multitude of species willing to hit baits and jigs. Good night time action can be had with Giant Trevally, Groupers, Amberjack, Barracuda, Barracouta, Dogtooth Tuna, Snappers and different species of Shark.
