Phuket & Similan fishing

Located in the sparkling blue waters of the Andaman Sea just 70 minutes Flying time south of Bangkok, Thailand's most popular beach destination has everything you cold possibly want on a holiday: beautiful beaches, some of the finest resort hotels, water sports, word class golf courses, exquisite seafood, international and Thai Cuisine, mountains, Rain forests, temples, coral reefs, turquoise seas and tropical sunshine - all in plentiful proportions. Whether you are looking for a quiet corner to enjoy a romantic retreat or an action packed time with plenty of colorful nightlife, Phuket has it all.

Phuket offers good fishing all year round. The months of July to October, during the south west monsoon, are especially good for Sailfish and Wahoo. November - March is a good time to go after Black Marlin, and the drop-of west of Phuket and Similan island are the hot spots. The best fishing is usually around the full moon and the new moon. Read our updated catch reports for more information. All the usual tropical sportfishing species are available around Phuket. There are Billfish; Black Marlin and Sailfish, often in huge numbers. Tuna are common and there are several varieties; Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Mackerel Tuna, Eastern little tuna and Longfin Tuna. Wahoo are plentiful during the monsoon season, Narrow Barred Mackerel (Tenggiri) and Barracuda are other members from the "razor gang" we regulary use to catch.

Giant Trevally are huge and plentiful and can produce fantastic action on popper casting near Racha islands. Other species include Dorado, Rainbow Runner, Blue Finned Trevally, Cobia and a variety of bottom fish. Techniques for catching these fish are as wide ranging as trolling with artificials, dead baits and live baits, trolling with the downrigger, casting poppers, jigging and spinning, drift fishing with live and dead baits and bottom fishing.

Our boats departs from Ao Chalong bay at the south east side of the island, the distance to the sailfish grounds at Racha Yai island is just 12 miles, 6 miles further south at Racha Noi island the popper casting for GTs can be spectacular. Racha Noi can also produce big marlins, sailfish and wahoo. 24 miles west of Ao Chalong there is a 200 meter drop off that produce Black marlin, wahoo, dorado and different kinds of tunas. If the billfish are not cooperating then the light tackle action here for tuna, dorado and wahoo are a good alternative all year round.

Similan Islands

The Similan Islands are a Marine National Park, consisting of nine spectacular, jungle clad islands, 55 miles Northwest of Phuket. The multi-day trip offered by Blue Water Anglers to the Similan islands offers the adventurous angler a realistic opportunity to target virtually every species of blue water game fish inhabiting the Andaman sea. Liveaboard trips from 2-days/1-night to 7-days/6-nights regularly produce outstanding action. New for the 2004 season is daytrips to the Similans with Gecko from Khao Lak beach (40 minutes by car north of Phuket) We have experienced incredible catches of Sailfish, Wahoo, Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Tenggiri and very good action while bottom fishing at night. 16 miles west of the Similans is a seamount called Thonmai, this is where we often encounter the Black Marlin. On a good tide on this seamount, trolling action can be non-stop with Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Skipjack and Barracuda. The Thai Government have imposed a 3 mile non fishing zone around the islands to protect the coral reefs, all our fishing is done outside this zone. The best area for marlin is the drop off 6 miles west of number 1 island and the seamount 16 miles west of the islands. The crossing from Phuket or Khao Lak beach use to produce very good action as well, with Sailfish, Marlin, Wahoo, Dorado and different kinds of tunas regularly caught.

The 1000 meter drop off  An overnight trip from Similan or Surin islands is a 1000 to 2000 meter drop off and here we have had some very big Black and Blue Marlin hitting our lures when doing the crossing to the Andaman islands from Phuket. The area have many seamounts that attract bait fish and also holds big yellowfin tuna and Dogtooth tuna, deep jigging and trolling here has produced very big Dogtooth tuna the last season. We can do 3-7 days trip to this area that includes Similan islands or Surin islands on the first and the last day of the trip.
