Bluewater Anglers are now offering freshwater fishing trips to Par Lai Lake in Phuket. The lake is of an informal shape, with three main areas interconnected by channels. The lake is set in tropical garden surroundings with onsite facilities including toilets, snack bar and a restaurant.
The lake holds a very good stock of a variety of species that include Striped Catfish, Walking Catfish, Pacu, Tarpon, Giant Gourami, Tilapia, Rohu, Giant and Striped Snakeheads.

The Striped Catfish in Par Lai Lake grow to well over world record size, and we have caught them that have weighed almost 25 kilos! We use lighter tackle than we do at Bungsam Lan Lake in Bangkok, so with the tackle balanced against the fish, they give a tremendous fight. At Par Lai Lake, the Striped Catfish are quite wary, and a stealthy approach is often the best method to catch them, similar to fishing for Carp in Europe.

Pacu are one of the most popular species at Par Lai, and with good reason! The speed at which these fish take the baits and run is phenomenal! Unsuspecting anglers have been known to have the rods torn from their hands when a good sized Pacu strikes! Once hooked the fish will often jump several times and charge towards the snags, or try and make a run for it down one of the channels. The Pacu grow at an amazing rate and we have had to beef up our tackle to deal with them. Their powerful jaws and human like crushing teeth have been known to break hooks clean in two.

Several of the species in the lake will take fly, including Pacu, Giant Gourami, Tarpon, Tilapia and the Snakehead species. Fly–fishing is an exciting way to fish for these species, but is not easy or as productive as fishing with baits. Green and white colored flies seem to work the best with a strong hook and heavy tippet. Casting is restricted in some areas of the lake due to overhanging trees along the bank. Please note we do not supply fly–fishing equipment and therefore you should bring along your own.

Using light float fishing equipment is highly productive for Tilapia which weigh up to just over a kilo, and also Rohu which put up a terrific fight on this kind of equipment. Float fishing is a good option to do when the other species stop feeding. When fishing at Par Lai it pays to keep on the move and go and find the fish which can easily be spooked after a good fish has been landed.

Another interesting species to target at Par Lai is the Giant Gourami. This species can usually be found close to the bank and overhanging trees, and can often be located in the channels. Once located, after laying down some loose feed and carefully placing the bait, its time to sit back away from the water and wait. The Gourami is a very cautious fish, and if the fish detects your presence, it will not touch the bait. Like most of the other fish in the lake they are good fighters and also a very impressive, if a little strange looking fish. Care must be taken when handling these fish as they have fins with spines and very sharp scales.
