Bungsam Lan

Bungsam Lan Lake Bangkok is the legendary big fish venue on the outskirts of the fascinating city of Bangkok. The massive fish that inhabit this lake are notorious for smashing rods and burning out reels, and leaving anglers deliriously happy, if completely exhausted!

We fish from 09:00–21:00, three hours longer than most of the other guiding companies that stop fishing at 18:00.
Having fished more days at Bungsam Lan over the last few years than any other western anglers, we have perfected the best methods, bait mixes and the right balance of top brand equipment to fish the most hard core amazing fishing lake in the world, and therefore feel qualified to give you the best angling experience of your life!

Much has been written about the power of the Giant Mekong Catfish and the Giant Siamese Carp, but even so, most anglers fishing the venue for the first time are shocked by the strength and stamina that these species possess.

The Giant Mekong Catfish is built for power; a very solid muscular body with pectoral fins that it can lock out, powered by its huge tail–fin mean this fish can stay deep for a very long time, and being a slow fighting fish it can keep up the fight longer than any other fish. Pound for pound this is the hardest fighting fish on the planet! Anglers, who have landed both Giant Mekong Catfish and also the Wels Catfish from Europe, consider the Mekong to have more than double the power of a Wels.

The Giant Siamese Carp, the largest Carp species in the world have been landed from this lake to a staggering 120 kilos! When the pictures of these massive fish are seen by people who have not seen one before, many people think the photograph has been faked! The fish are so huge! Being a very intelligent fish with immense power and speed, these fish are not the easiest species to catch, but the joy and satisfaction after landing the most magnificent Carp species of all is unrivalled. The experience has been described as scoring the winning goal in the world cup final, and I have actually seen grown men cry after we have released one!

There is a very large stock of Striped Catfish in the lake with an average weight of around 12 kilos. Although not as strong as A Giant Mekong, compared with many fish these are also very good fighters. When the other species in the lake are reluctant to feed, Striped Catfish can usually be relied upon to keep the action going.

When targeted on lighter tackle, the Pacu is also a very good sporting fish for anglers to target. The Pacu is not a native species of Thailand, being a South American species, but being a hardy fish that grows very quickly there is an abundance of them in Bungsam Lan. With jaws like bolt cutters and a set of large crushing teeth, these species are regularly known to actually break hooks in half!

As the light starts to fade, some of the lakes other inhabitants start to feed and switching to live–baiting can often prove an exhilarating experience with the Giant Catfish. The fish looks like a cross between a Striped Catfish and a Giant Mekong Catfish. The Giant Catfish, also known as a Chow Phraya Catfish has beautiful elongated fins and is predominately a predatory fish, but can also occasionally be caught on bread based baits intended for other species. The Giant Catfish is much faster than the other main species of Catfish in the lake, and once hooked goes off on incredibly fast long runs. They don’t quite have the stamina of the Mekong, but the speed makes up for this, and makes the Giant Catfish one of the most exciting species to catch at Bungsam Lan.

The last hours of daylight and early evening is also one of the best times to target the most wary fish in the lake; The Giant Siamese Carp. Often during the day, the Catfish action can be so intense that the Carp wait until things calm down before they will feed. Most of the other guiding companies stop fishing at 6:00pm, not us; we fish until 9:00pm, an extra 3 hours fishing during one of the most productive times of the day for the Giant Siamese Carp.
